Alec tells him to stop in alarm. Jace looks down at Hodge with an unexpressionable face that reminds Clary of Valentine. He says that Hodge knew what his father was doing to him.

Alec looks from Jace to Hodge, not knowing what they're talking about. Jace yells at Hodge that he should have told him what he was. Hodge looks up at Jace, saying that he wasn't sure.

He says that he thought he could have been taught to be good. He says that he tried his best by you, but Jace retorts that was until Valentine came back and the he did everything he asked of him.

Hodge says that he lived in fear while he was at the Institute but Jace doesn't buy it, saying that Hodge is just trying to make them feel sorry for him.

Hodge says that he knew that if Valentine offered him to not be bound to the Institute then he would have been too weak to resist the offer.

Jace asks him if it was worth it for a life of rotting in the cells of the Gard. Hodge tells them that Valentine will be after the Mortal Glass now and how no one can own the Mortal Glass.

Jace scoffs, saying the Hodge must have gone mad while in the cell. Clary looks up at the roof of the Gard and tells Jace they should get out there as the fire is spreading.

Hodge tells the group that Lake Lyn is the Mirror and Jace lowers his knife. The Gard exploded and Alec turns to Jace, saying they should get out of there.

Alec supports Hodge and tries to walk away with him, but Jace gets in their way. He asks what will happen when Valentine gets the Mortal Glass.

Jace says that if he tells it to the Clave then they'll never hear it from them as they're seen as just children, he says that Hodge owes them.

Hodge shakes his head and Jace's grip on the knife's hilt tightens, saying that for every lie he tells he'll cut off one finger.

Hodge looks scared, Alec says that this is what his father's like, not him. Jace tells him he doesn't know him. Alec looks at Clary and she realises that he doesn't know why Jace is acting like this.

He snaps that if Hodge was going to tell the Clave what he told them, then he would have told them already. Someone suddenly stabs Hodge in the chest.

Alec lowers Hodge to the ground and looks up at Jace, asking him why. Jace turns white in the face, saying that he didn't.

Clary notes that his knife is still held by his side. Sebastian appears out of the darkness and Jace looks from Hodge to him.

He asks him whether it was him that stabbed Hodge, a dazed expression on his face. Sebastian explains that he had to or he would have killed them.

Jace's voice raises as he asks him with what as he didn't even have a weapon. Alec shouts to Jace to come and help him with Hodge.

Jace goes and kneels beside Alec, depsite the fact that Sebastian is talking to him. Alec tells Jace to take his stele out of his pocket and try drawing an iratze.

Hodge edges away from the stele in Jace's hand, looking from Jace to Sebastian. Hodge says the word Jonathan and Jace tells him to call him Jace.

When Hodge says 'not you' Jace believes he means he doesn't want him to draw the iratze on him. He tries to say something to Jace and then dies.

The group then confront Sebastian, Clary says his story doesn't make any sense. Jace tells her that's because he's lying to them.

Sebastian says that it's a little odd that they're upset that he killed a man when Jace was about to cut his fingers off one by one. Jace looks at Sebastian with loathing and tells him he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Sebastian stops infront of Jace and talks about how he kissed Clary. Sebastian says he's sick of the lot of them and he turns to Jace and says that everytime he's not panting after his sister, he's whining about how his father didn't love him.

They realise that he's a spy for Valentine and Sebastian laughs at the fact it took them so long to understand.

Jace tells him they may not be that bright, but at least they're alive. When Sebastian points out that he is also alive Jace snarls that it won't be for long and he flings his blade at Sebastian.

Sebastian darts aside and grabs Jace's arm and then grabbed him by the back of the jacket. Jace flies through the air as Sebastian throws him, hitting the wall of the Gard with bone-cracking force and then crumpling to the ground.

Clary calls out his name and runs to attack Sebastian. Sebastian attacks the group and threatens to kick Simon when Jace stops him.

Clary looks up to see that he standing a few feet from Sebastian, his face is bloody and he's holding a seraph blade. He says that he's never killed a human with one of them before and that he's willing to try.

Sebastian leaves and Jace leans over Clary anxiously. Someone hands a stele to Jace and he draws an iratze on Clary's arm.

She looks up at them and Jace tells her she has concussion and that the iratze will help. Jace scowls as she is barely able to stand, saying she shouldn't have attacked Sebastian without a weapon.

Alec says that it wasn't her fault and that he'd never seen someone get the better of Jace like that before.

Jace reluctantly admits that he surprised him and that he must have had some kind of special training.

Simon looks at Jace and asks him how long he thought he was really in the shadows. Jace grimaces and says the Clave will catch him and curse him.

Before they leave, Jace stops and drapes his jacket over Hodge's face. They arrive back at the Accords Hall and Alec spots the Lightwood family.

Jace catches his breath and then begins shoving his way through the crowd after Alec. Clary sees Simon looking after Jace with a stricken experession on his face.

She sees Max Lightwood lying limp in Robert Lightwood's arms. Clary remembers Jace saying that Max could sleep anywhere, and it look almost like he were sleeping now.

Jace stands, unmoving, looking lost. Jace walks Clary back to Amatis' house and Clary feels that every moment with Jace is precious and limited.

When she shivers, Jace glances at her and asks her if she's cold. Clary says that she was just wondering why Valentine didn't kill Luke, and Jace replies that in a way, Valentine respects Luke even if he is a Downworlder.

Clary thinks of the look Jace had given Simon before and shakes it out of her head, not wanting to think of Jace like Valentine.

Clary says that Valentine won't win against Downworlders and Shadowhunters when Jace asks her what makes her think Shadowhunters will fight with Downworlders.

He says that Luke's a idealist, Clary asks him why that's a bad thing and he replies that it's not, he's just not one. Clary says he's not like Valentine either, causing Jace to start.

Jace stands outside Amatis' house for a long while after Clary goes inside, twisting a small piece of thread between his fingers.

As Clary lays in bed she hears rustling noise, she lets out a breath as she realises it's Jace.

She asks him what he's doing here. He says that he had to see her, but that he knew he shouldn't. He tells her that he's just realised something and she whispers to him that he doesn't have to say it.

He says he was trying to go somewhere, but he kept ending up back here. Clary tells him they have to stop feeling this way as it's their only chance to be together at all.

Jace says when she dates other boys and gets married, he'll watch and die a little inside everyday, but Clary tells him that he won't care by then.

He tells her that he loves her and that he will love her until the day he dies. He tells her he wants to go to sleep with her and wake up with her there just once and she thinks to herself that she didn't want anything else in the world but to spend the night with Jace.

They go to bed together, not touching apart from their fingertips. She whispers goodnight to him and clasps his hand. When Clary wakes up she realises that Jace has gone.

She finds a note from him along with the Morgenstern family ring that Jace had been wearing around his neck. Clary reads the note and understands why Jace told her all of the things he told her the night before, because he didn't think he was going to see her again.

Jace manages to track down Sebastian and finds him with Valentine. Jace sees Sebastian put his hand on Valentine's arm and recognises that he is intimate and confident with Valentine and Jace can't believe it when Valentine doesn't brush him off.

Soon Valentine calls Sebastian by his real name, Jonathan, shocking Jace and clutches at a rock for support.

They start talking about Clary and her power and Jace suddenly feels scared for her safety, but also proud that she is in the center of things.

When Valentine leaves Sebastian tells Jace that he might as well come out as he knows he's there. Jace freezes and then attempts to run out of the cave.

However, he sees the entrance is blocked by Sebastian and skids to a halt. Sebastian asks him if he was jealous about how close he was with Valentine and Jace merely shrugs, saying that he's a little young to be dating his father.

Sebastian looks at him, shocked, and Jace enjoys the moment. Sebastian tells him that the same man that brought Jace up, also brought him up and Jace asks him what he means.

He then realises that Valentine is Sebastian's father, making them brothers. Sebastian then throws his arms around Jace's shoulders and tells him goodbye, before tightening his arms around Jace's neck and cutting off his breath.

Jace wakes up and coughs up blood. Sebastian asks him what he got for his ninth birthday and Jace asks him where he grew up, Sebastian replies that he grew up in the valley.

When Sebastian says that he knew about Jace but Jace didn't know about him, Jace retorts that he obviously didn't have much to brag about.

Jace watches as Sebastian moves to the center of the chamber, a sword held in his hands. He thinks to himself that Sebastian didn't intend to merely kill him, otherwise he would have done it by now.

Sebastian suddenly slices a stalagmite, causing a roaring sound that makes Jace's ears pop and he finds it hard to breathe.

Sebastian shows Jace Valentine's army and Jace passes out for a few minutes, when he comes to he finds Sebastian knelt over him.

Jace tells him that Valentine told him to open the gate at midnight and that it can't be midnight yet. Sebastian tells Jace that when you stand before the Mortal Glass and summon the angel, it grants you one favor, he says that Valentine is going to ask for every Shadowhunter who doesn't follow him to be stripped of their powers and they will become Forsaken.

Jace can't believe it, saying that even Valentine wouldn't do that. Jace demands to know why Sebastian keeps calling him 'little angel boy' and tells Sebastian that he's not afraid of Valentine.

Sebastian said he shouldn't be, he should be afraid of him. Jace looks up just as Sebastian holds the sword to his collarbone.

Jace asks him if he's going to kill him now, while he's tied up. Sebastian scoffs, saying that Jace is nothing more than an annoyance, but Jace just asks him why he won't untie his hands if that's the case.

Sebastian asks him if he has any prayers, he should say them now. Jace tells him that he has a message for his father, Sebastian agrees to pass on the message but Jace recognises that he is lying.

Jace tells him that there's a witness to what he's been doing and points out that Hugin Hugo the raven has been watching the whole time.

Jace tells him that if Valentine finds out that he murdered him while he was tied up then he will be disgusted. He tells Sebastian to untie him and fight him, Sebastian becomes angry and raises the sword, then brings it down.

Jace wakes up and realises that he's passed out again, but he realises that his hands are no longer tied behind him.

Jace stands up slowly and dizzily, he reaches for his belt and sees that he only has a dagger left, no match for a sword.

Jace tells Sebastian that he can't fight with that, but Sebastian doesn't care, walking towards Jace.

Jace then swings his arm back and punches Sebastian in the face, sending him flying. Jace catches his sword as he drops it and stands over Sebastian with it.

Jace hesitates when thinking about killing Sebastian, thinking about how he hadn't been able to kill his father and how Sebastian was a murderer.

Suddenly, Sebastian jumps up, kicking Jace's hand and causing him to drop the sword. He then catches it and whips it towards Jace's heart.

Jace leaps backwards but the sword still gives him a shallow cut across the chest. Sebastian chuckles and advances towards Jace, who backs up.

As Sebastian slashes the sword towards Jace he leaps up into the air and catches the lowest branch of a tree he'd been under.

Jace flings the dagger down towards Sebastian, who suddenly appears on the branch beside him. Jace sees that they're even now as Sebastian has dropped his sword and Jace no longer has his dagger.

Sebastian flings himself at Jace, knocking him off the branch and causing him to fall to the ground, hard.

The two of the punch each other until Jace manages to grab Sebastian's throat. Sebastian seizes Jace's wrist and and jerks it backwards, snapping bones.

Sebastian kneels on Jace's chest, his dagger in his hand and pointing it above Jace's heart. Sebastian tells Jace that he's not Valentine's son and tells him his father butchered a corpse to get Jace and use him for his experiments.

Jace realises suddenly that Sebastian is actually Jonathan Christopher Morgenstern and that he's the one with demon blood in him, not Jace.

Sebastian then pushes the dagger down into Jace's chest, causing him to scream out loud. Sebastian then remembers Clary and tells Jace he could have spent the rest of his life with her if he hadn't have been so stupid.

He then whispers in his ear that Clary loved him too and he should keep that in his mind while he died. Suddenly, Sebastian's hand is chopped off.

Jace looks up to see Isabelle, her whip soaked with blood. Isabelle kneels down by Jace, tears in her eyes and he thinks to himself that he must look pretty bad for her to look at him like that.

Isabelle starts drawing an iratze on Jace while explaining that he's not Valentine's son. Suddenly Isabelle screams and Jace tries to reach for her as she is flung to the side.

As Sebastian kicks Isabelle in the ribs Jace believes that he can almost hear them cracking. Jace rolls to the side and staggers to his feet, he walks towards Isabelle, her screams making him carry on.

He walks up behind Sebastian, who is concentrating on Isabelle, Jace thinks to himself that he probably thinks he's already dead.

As Sebastian is about to finish Isabelle off, Jace raises his hand and stabs his dagger into Sebastian's back.

Sebastian looks at Jace in horror, then opens his mouth as if to say something to him, before crumpling to the ground.

Isabelle calls to Jace as she struggles to sit up, he tries to turn towards her but passes out. As Valentine's Sword his knocked out of his hand as he tries to kill Clary.

Clary looks up to see Jace there, holding a sword of his own. Clary tries to say Jace's name and Valentine tells Jace that she can't reply to him.

This angers Jace and he asks him what he's done to her. Jace tells Valentine he knows why he's going to summon the Angel and that he's sent Isabelle to warn the Clave.

Valentine looks at the sword in Jace's hand and says that it's a Morgenstern sword. Jace smiles and tells him that it was Jonathan's and Valentine realises that Jonathan is dead.

Valentine is amazed and says that he raised Jonathan and there was no better warrior, Jace couldn't have killed him.

Valentine sinks to the ground and pulls Jace onto his lap and rocks him. He holds Jace, who dies in his arms. When Clary tricks Valentine, the Angel grants her one wish.

She wishes for Jace. She opens her eyes and sees Jace sitting by her. He says that he heard her voice and it brought him back, she tells him it was the Angel, not her.

She asks him if he knows he's not her brother and Jace grins and says he does. Jace begins to have nightmares in which he kills Clary.

One night, he dreams that someone knocks on his door and expects it to be Isabelle. He opens the door and discovers that it's Clary.

He tells her she shouldn't be there and she gets up to leave, saying that she came all the way here so she might as well kiss him goodnight.

The two of them kiss and then move onto the bed. He begins to unbutton her shirt, holding a dagger in his other hand. He then stabs her with knife.

He wakes up and rolls out of bed, shivering. He thinks about how the first few times he'd had that dream, he'd woken up and vomited and so now he was careful about eating before he went to bed.

He had tried everything to stop the dreams from happening, but they wouldn't stop. He says that even when he's awake, he finds it hard to look at Clary, saying that she'd always been able to see through him.

He thinks to himself that he's not like Valentine. When Simon is attacked by two strangers, he wakes up to find Jace shaking him frantically.

Jace asked him what he did, meaning the Mark of Cain and explains to Simon that the two guys had been following him since he got off the subway.

Jace asks if it was the Mark of Cain that defeated the men, saying it shone white before the man dissolved.

He tells Simon that he's never seen anything like that before. Jace returns to Kyle's apartment with Simon and Simon notices that Jace looks ill.

He asks Jace when the last time he ate was, but he can't seem to remember exactly. He takes Jace to the supermarket to get him something to eat, as there isn't much choice at Kyle's apartment.

One the way there he asks Jace whether he was following him and Jace replies that he was. He says that he was following Clary, but that she got in a cab and so he doubled back and followed Simon instead.

When Simon questions this, Jace says that Clary left her phone and that he thought that if he could figure out where she was going, he could leave it somewhere where she could find it.

Simon asks him why he's avoiding Clary, but Jace doesn't really answer him. Later on, Clary and Jace become intimate with each other.

Clary sees Jace reaching for something and then there is suddenly a flash of silver and something cuts her along her arm. Jace launches himself off the bed and stands in the middle of the room.

Clary looks at him, confused, when she sees him holding the knife that had once belonged to his father in his left hand.

She sees that there is a smear of blood on the knife. He drops the knife and sinks to the ground, his head in his hands.

After a while, Jace explains to Clary that it happens every night. He has given Clary the knife and she keeps one hand on it to reassure him.

He tells her he dreams that he kills her, when she says that they're only dreams he replies that he's just proved that they're not.

He says that he's not worried about going crazy, he's worried about hurting her. She tells him that he should have told her but he says that he just wanted to be Jace Lightwood.

He says he wanted to act like his upbringing hadn't touched him, but maybe he will always be Jace Morgenstern. Then he goes on to say that he's been avoiding her because, although Jace Lightwood deserves her, Jace Morgenstern doesn't.

Clary thinks for a while and says that she doesn't think it's a psychological problem, but that someone's doing this to him. Jace thinks of Sebastian, but Clary brushes it off, saying that Sebastian's dead and even if he did have that power, he would have used it before.

She says that they should go to the Silent City so that the Brothers can find out if someone's been messing around in his brain. Luke has blue eyes and brown, uneven hair with ragged-looking clothes.

He is tall, with squared shoulders and wears glasses. His favorite shirts to wear are flannel shirts.

He is portrayed by Aidan Turner in the film adaptation of the book, and Isaiah Mustafa in the television series. After the Uprising Luke had offered Jocelyn to marry him but she refused and when they parted ways Luke couldn't forget her and went looking for her.

When he finally found her in New York, he chose to leave his life as a Werewolf behind to live a mundane life, all whilst harbouring a deep love for her.

Even though it took Luke many years, he finally told Jocelyn how he feels after she awoke from her coma. A few weeks later, the two became engaged and were married after the Dark War.

She was born in May 31, is the younger sister of Alec and Jace and is older than Max. Passionate and with a high sense of fashion.

She is rebellious and very beautiful. Her cooking is often made fun of by Jace and Alec. She is known to be dangerous and often carries weapons in her tall boots that are never less than seven inches.

Her signature weapon is an electrum whip with which she is quite skilled. She dresses well, as shown when she gave Clary to wear clothes that she picked for Magnus's party.

She is shown to take responsibility for situations, shouldering the blame for her brother Max's death, despite having been struck unconscious at the time.

She is comforted by Simon, and ends up sleeping in a literal, non-sexual sense with him. She begins to casually date Simon—who is also dating Maia at the same time—and then later upon finding out about Maia, breaks up with him.

After this and seeing how she is genuinely hurt by it, begins to slowly realize that she may actually be in love with Simon, but refuses to admit it.

Izzy obviously cares for Jace and Alec, and is fiercely protective of both of them. Because of this, she is constantly torn over the fact that her brother is struggling with his sexuality and when Jace is heartbroken over Clary during their supposedly sibling relationship.

In City of Glass , she yells at Clary for only thinking of herself and not realizing how much pain Jace is in due to how much he really loves her.

Isabelle is very beautiful and tall. She has very dark brown eyes with hints of gold that initially appear to be black. She is curvaceous and has long black hair that is described as "black as spilt ink" by Clary.

She dresses stylishly, often with high heels. However, she despised her height and hated towering over everyone and wished to be small and delicate like Clary.

She is portrayed by Jemima West in the film adaptation of the book, and Emeraude Toubia in the television series.

Isabelle is the middle child in the Lightwood family. Her older brother is Alec and her younger brother was Max, who died at the hand of Jonathan Christopher Morgenstern.

Jace is her adoptive brother. Her parents run the Institute in New York. Lives in the New York Institute with his siblings. He is the oldest of the Lightwoods and is quieter than both Isabelle, his brother Max, and Jace, his best friend and adoptive brother.

Alec is 18, making him legally an 'adult,' which gives him permission to attend Clave meetings. He was jealous of Clary, at first, upon meeting her due to knowing how Jace felt about her, and Alec himself had a crush on Jace.

Later, he begins to forget him and he starts to date and falls in love with Magnus Bane a warlock who is immortal and nearly years old , though his strong brotherly love for Jace remains.

Alec is mostly soft-spoken and serious. He tries his best to act wisely and is not as reckless as Jace.

Later in the story, it is revealed early on that he had never killed a demon, which changes in the middle of City of Bones.

He shows himself to be extremely caring about the ones he loves and is willing to do anything to protect them. Among the whole group, Alec is the most intelligent.

When he finally accepts himself, he becomes a more relaxed person and comes out as gay to the whole Clave and everyone there, including his family and parents, by publicly passionately kissing Magnus In the TV show he kisses Magnus at his arranged wedding to Lydia Branwell.

Clary notes at the end of the fourth novel that Alec had become more generous with himself, allowing him to be more generous with others.

Alec, as seen in City of Fallen Angels , can also become extremely jealous, getting angry at Magnus when he discovers Magnus' long dating history and relationship with Camille, a vampire woman.

Alec becomes a much more central character in City of Lost Souls and is one of the book's narrators. He, along with Clary, leads the search for Jace, while also dealing with Camille.

Alec is said to have a thin, wiry build and like his mother, has black hair, luminous blue eyes, and impressive height. He is also very pale.

Alec is described as being very handsome as well, but unlike his sister, he tries to downplay his looks by wearing worn out sweaters and damaged clothing.

He is very handsome, but unlike Izzy, he is very subdued in the fashion department. He was portrayed by Kevin Zegers in the film adaptation of the book, and Matthew Daddario in the television series.

Alec is the oldest child of the Lightwood family, and the first son of Maryse and Robert Lightwood. Isabelle and Max Lightwood are his younger siblings, and Jace is his adoptive brother and Parabatai.

Magnus Bane is the former High Warlock of Brooklyn. He regularly tampered with the mind of Clary Fray after designing a spell that would erase her memories of the Shadow World once every two years as a favour to her mother, Jocelyn.

He first meets the other Shadowhunters at one of his Downworlder parties. He later has Clary retrieve the Book of the White for him in City of Glass , and agrees to help revive her mother with it.

In City of Heavenly Fire , he admits to Alec that he is almost years old, although he often lies about his age for instance, in "The Bane Chronicles" he claims to be under years old, to which his friends Catarina Loss and Ragnor Fell laugh, obviously aware of the lie, and in "City of Glass" he claims to be Despite his flamboyant appearance and whimsical personality, Magnus is a kind yet jaded person who yearns for love and acceptance, but has great trouble revealing his honest desires and personal secrets to others due to his long and traumatic past.

His life has frequently been entangled with the fates of certain Shadowhunters specifically the Herondale family during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, and the Fairchild family following the collapse of Valentine's Circle , but he doesn't become seriously involved with the workings of their society and their struggle for survival and reformation until he meets Alec Lightwood, who goes on to become the love of his life.

Magnus Bane is described as being of Asian descent, due to his human parent being half-Dutch, half-Indonesian.

He is an inch or two taller than Alec and is said to be lean, but not skinny, with lightly muscled arms.

He has brown skin and black, nearly shoulder-length hair that is usually styled and dyed. He wears all kinds of makeup, such as glitter around his eyes and blue lipstick, and in City of Glass is also noted to own more makeup tools and accessories than even Isabelle Lightwood.

He likes to flaunt his bisexuality by wearing flashy and sometimes bizarre clothing. He is said to be about 19 years old, physically.

Magnus' mother and step-father began to fear him when he started nearing the age of ten, after they realised he wasn't fully human.

It is revealed that his mother was in fact tricked into sleeping with a demon who disguised himself as her husband, and when she realized, some time after Magnus' birth, that Magnus was a warlock in other words, someone half-human, half-demon and not her husband's child, she hanged herself in her family's barn in the novel while, in the TV show she slits her throat with a knife on her bed.

Soon after, his step-father tried to drown him in the novel but not in the TV show, and Magnus burned him alive in an attempt to save himself from his father.

He was then brought up by the Silent Brothers of Madrid, who also came up with his name. Camille does state in City of Lost Souls that his biological father is a Prince of Hell, therefore implying he is a high-ranked demon.

Whenever asked who his father is, Magnus always avoids the question or changes the subject. Because Asmodeus is also a fallen angel, Magnus is capable of interacting with witchlights—he can make them glow red.

Maia Roberts is a biracial teenager born and raised in a New Jersey suburban neighborhood. Her brother, Daniel, was beautiful and abusive, though her parents never believed her, even when he broke her arm.

This treatment leads to Maia hating and fearing beautiful boys, even after her brother was killed in a hit-and-run. In tenth-eleventh grade, Maia met Jordan Kyle and they began dating.

However, during their relationship, he soon began to become controlling and abusive and she broke up with him.

He became enraged at her break up with him and, in werewolf form, attacked her on her way home from a party.

She was a mundane and did not know that he was a werewolf or anything about the Shadow World. Jordan vanished shortly afterward, and Maia soon turned into a werewolf on the next full moon.

She ran away from home and joined the wolf-pack in New York and became good friends with Luke, the leader of the pack.

She became associated with the Shadowhunters and develops a crush on Simon, and in City of Glass gets into a competition with Isabelle for his attention.

In City of Ashes , Maia leaves Luke's apartment to apologize to Simon for her vicious reaction after she was attacked and realized he was a vampire.

On her way over to him, she is attacked by Agramon, the Demon of Fear which she interprets as her older brother Daniel who violently abused her when he was still alive.

Valentine then abducts her to drain her completely of blood so he can complete his spell. Simon is kidnapped as well shortly after for his vampire blood.

It is learned that lycanthropes are negatively affected by all kinds of silver when Valentine sprinkles silver dust on her and she screams in pain.

At the beginning of City of Fallen Angels , Maia and Simon are casually dating, while Simon, not to her or Isabelle's knowledge, ends up also casually dating Isabelle.

The truth of Simon's actions comes out just as Maia runs into her ex-boyfriend Jordan Kyle. Jordan, who had recently become acquainted with Simon, was the one who turned Maia into a werewolf.

However, Jordan's actions were not what they seemed to be, as he had just become a new werewolf when he bit her and therefore unable to control his actions.

Maia is understandably angry to have him back in her life due to his abusiveness during their relationship and him turning her into a werewolf, but when she learns the truth behind what Jordan did, she understands and even seems to forgive him when realizing he is genuinely regretful of his past actions towards her.

Towards the end of the book, after she and Jordan have helped Isabelle and Alec look for Simon, she and Jordan kiss and eventually reaffirm their relationship.

Maia is described as having curly, brown and gold hair her eyelashes are described as the color of toast , light brown skin and amber-brown eyes.

She is also described as having a heart-shaped face and rather curvy figure when Clary notes, "No girl should have that great of a body.

She is portrayed by Alisha Wainwright in the television series. Not much is said about Maia's mother or father, however her older brother Daniel is mentioned.

Daniel was said to be an attractive boy, but a very abusive brother to Maia, It is said that he gave her bruises where they wouldn't be seen, breaking her arm, etc.

He died when he was hit by a car while at a young age, but Maia still felt afraid of him for many more years after. Jocelyn grew up in Idris with Luke, Valentine, and the other Circle members.

She was married to Valentine at the age of 19, though she says she married him because she loved him, she later realized that he was torturing innocent people.

She fled Idris when she found out she was pregnant with Clary, so he could not do harm to her daughter like he did on Jonathan Sebastian , her first-born son.

Later it is said that Luke tracked her down and Clary, being around the age of 3—5 at the time though it does not specify, opened the door to him.

He then stayed in their lives and him and Jocelyn lived their lives in New York, also taking a large part in raising Clary, until Jocelyn is located by Valentine.

She takes a potion, putting herself in a coma to protect her secrets and remains unconscious until she is revived by Magnus Bane in City of Glass.

She is also a Shadowhunter warrior. In City of Glass , after Valentine was killed by the angel Raziel, Lucian Graymark Luke finally declared his love for her, telling her he's been in love with her for over 20 years.

After he walks out the door, initially believing she did not return his feelings, she soon runs after him to tell she loves him too.

It is then later revealed in City of Fallen Angels that they are engaged to be married and also are "disgustingly in love" as described by Clary.

Later in City of Lost Souls , after Luke is wounded by Sebastian and in critical condition, Jocelyn says to him how she regrets failing to have noticed his feelings for her back when they were younger and wishes he would have told her how he felt about her so she would have married "the right guy" instead of Valentine.

Hence, so things would have been "different" and could have turned out better than they were currently. However, Luke doesn't have any regrets saying how if things had been any different, "they" wouldn't have Clary, making Jocelyn happy since he said "as though he was sure Clary was his own daughter".

Jocelyn is described of being elegant and beautiful. She has long red hair that is usually in a twist, and still carries the scars of her Shadowhunting days.

Clary is often said to look almost identical to her. Jocelyn's hair is also a darker red than Clary's. She is portrayed by Lena Headey in the film adaptation of the book, and Maxim Roy in the television series.

Jocelyn has two children, Jonathan Christopher and Clarissa Adele. Her parents were killed in a fire set by Valentine Morgenstern, in which she also believed that Jonathan had been killed.

She is engaged to Lucian Graymark Luke as of City of Lost Souls and they were married in City of Heavenly Fire as the majority of the epilogue takes place at the wedding reception.

Valentine Morgenstern is the main antagonist of the first half of the series, and is the former husband of Jocelyn Fairchild.

This also makes him biological father to Clarissa Morgenstern and Jonathan Christopher Morgenstern also known as Sebastian. In his youth he was a very skilled Shadowhunter from a rich family in Alicante.

Upon the death of his father, Valentine fell in love with Jocelyn Fairchild, and together he and his group of young Shadowhunters formed the infamous group known as the Circle.

With him leading the Circle, they had intended to share the gift of the Nephilim with the rest of humanity by using the Mortal Cup.

Valentine and Jocelyn married and all was well until his ideas for the Circle became more radical, as Valentine wanted to kill all Downworlders.

He infects his son with Demon blood and is betrayed by his former best friend, Lucian Graymark, and his wife at the Uprising of the Accords.

Upon fleeing the battle, Valentine is assumed to be dead and goes into hiding with his son and Jace Herondale. Years later, when City of Bones begins, Valentine finds Jocelyn and wants her to reveal where the Mortal Cup is located.

He kidnaps her, but is unable to extract information from her due to her self-induced comatose state. His arrogance, however, as well as his torturing of the angel Ithuriel, Raziel's brother, causes the angel to slay him.

During the series, it is also revealed he faked his death and took on the name of Michael Wayland, raising Jace Herondale as Jace Wayland.

Valentine is said to be tall and very handsome. He is broad-shouldered and has light blond, almost silver hair.

He also has black eyes. Though in the movie he has dark brown hair and blue eyes. He is portrayed by Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the film adaptation of the book, and Alan van Sprang in the television series.

Clarissa realizes that she is Valentine's daughter in the first book, City of Bones , but being raised by Jocelyn her whole life is void of Valentine's influence.

His son however, was tutored by him to be a very talented Shadowhunter and ruthless killer. He later becomes Valentine's spy, taking the name Sebastian Verlac.

Valentine also adopts Jace Herondale as his son, training him as well as Jonathan, making him as skilled a Shadowhunter as Jonathan.

Valentine also experimented on his children. Hoping to make a stronger and better Shadowhunter, he infused Jonathan with demon blood while in Jocelyn's womb.

However, a side effect of the blood was that it would "burn out his [Jonathan's] humanity as poison burns the life from blood. The experimentation on Jonathan led to Jocelyn feeling sick and very depressed.

To make her feel better he gave her powdered Angel blood, not knowing that she was carrying a second child Clary , infusing Clary with Angel blood in the same way that Jonathan was with Demon blood.

In the end, Valentine trained Jace, but was forced to abandon him when he was 10 years old, making Valentine the only father Jace has known.

It is also thought that of the two boys, the angel and the demon, that Valentine loved Jace more than his own son.

He is very sadistic in nature, as a result of having been experimented on with the blood of the Greater Demon Lilith, which robbed him of his humanity.

He first appears in City of Glass as Sebastian Verlac, charming his way into the lives of the Lightwoods.

He takes Clary to see Ragnor Fell, and kisses her, disgusting her. Upon Clary's return with Jace to Alicante, it is discovered that Max Lightwood had seen someone climbing the demon warding towers.

Sebastian was the person climbing the towers, and it was his blood that was used to bring down the wards. During the first attack on Alicante, he also kills Max Lightwood and severely injures Isabelle Lightwood.

He is eventually tracked down and killed by Jace, before the summoning of Raziel by Valentine, but his body is never recovered.

He is taken by his "mother", Lilith, and taken to safety. She uses Jace as leverage and tries to bring him back from the dead.

In City of Fallen Angels he is awoken, and uses a rune put on Jace to control him. He becomes the main antagonist in City of Lost Souls , using Lilith's bond to alter Jace's memories to believe they are on the same side and plans on raising and army of demons and Dark Shadowhunters to destroy the world.

Clary infiltrates his inner circle through Jace and they both continually mistrust each other but are forced to work together when they are attacked by enemy demons.

Eventually Clary learns the truth of his plans and they engage in a bloody battle. Unable to kill him because it will kill Jace too, she gives up but successfully destroys their base of operations with one of her runes.

After a dark ritual, he uses the Infernal Cup to create more Dark Shadowhunters and almost turns Clary but is quickly stopped by the arrival of the Lightwoods and their allies.

Before he manages to escape, Clary is forced to stab Jace with the angelic sword Glorious, severing his bond with Sebastian and causing the latter horrible pain.

In City of Heavenly Fire, Sebastian is attacking institutes around the world and turning Shadowhunters into Endarkened.

Meanwhile, Jace and Sebastian were traveling all over the world preparing for Sebastian's plan. Jace, unable to stay away from Clary, visited her and asked her to follow them.

Clary was considering the offer but their meeting was cut short when Jocelyn saw Sebastian in her kitchen and screamed. Their little adventure ended with Sebastian throwing a silver dagger to Luke and leaving with Jace.

Jace's allegiance to Sebastian was confirmed. Jace came back for Clary early that morning and found her on the front porch of Luke's house waiting for him.

Clary joined them and Sebastian and Jace kept working on their plans without explaining them to her. Clary tried to understand the connection between her brother and boyfriend but she couldn't find a way to help Jace, not without raising suspicions.

Jace, still under Lilith's spell, participated in all of Sebastian's plans and at the same time dated Clary. He was the happiest Clary had ever seen him.

However, after an unfortunate turn of events, his bond with Sebastian was temporarily severed and he was able to say the truth to Clary about the Infernal Cup and Sebastian's real intentions, after which he unsuccessfully tried to flee to the Clave in order to turn in the Cup and himself.

After his attempted escape, his Twinning rune that bound him to Sebastian healed and he was back under his control. Once at the Seventh Sacred Site , Sebastian, with Jace and Clary by his side, was preparing to create his own army of Endarkened , when Jace's family and the New York werewolf pack came in, along with Simon holding the Glorious.

Simon passed this to Clary explaining that the blade would burn out all the evil in whoever it struck, and thus should destroy the bond.

Unable to reach Sebastian, Clary used the Glorious and stabbed Jace, believing that it wouldn't kill him as his heart was more good than evil.

Jace was set alight, severing the connection between the two and leading the others to believe that he was dead.

Sebastian enraged fled with his army. However, after a few moments, Clary noticed his heart was still beating and he was taken to the Institute to be cured by Brother Zachariah.

When Clary was finally allowed to visit Jace, he told her that stabbing him with Glorious had filled him with Heavenly fire , which could burn anything he touched.

Jace bluntly pointed out that he was obviously unhappy since his apartment was a mess and he had take-out containers everywhere, clearly gorging himself on take-out food.

However, that did not help. Due to the several attacks on different Institutes by the Sebastian's Endarkened army, they were all ordered to pack up and gather in Idris for an emergency meeting of the Clave.

At that meeting, Jace first met the Blackthorn children and Emma Carstairs. By the end of the meeting, the Clave decided to use the heavenly fire within Jace to defeat Sebastian, although they did not know how to get the fire out of him.

Jace and Clary took a nighttime walk around the city. The two ultimately ended up in an alley, where, despite Jace's hesitation, Clary succeeded in kissing him.

Their kissing escalated so quickly that Jace lost control over the heavenly fire, which caused him to burn handprints into the brick wall he was leaning against.

He felt so panicked and fearful that he would hurt Clary that he quickly pulled away. The next day, Jace took Clary to buy her a new sword.

Diana Wrayburn , the owner of the shop, then gave Clary a Morgenstern family shortsword called Heosphoros , for free.

While Clary blessed her sword in Accords Hall fountain, they saw the demon towers light up in the color of battle.

Despite not being allowed, the two went through a Portal and joined the battle at Adamant Citadel.

Jace fought Sebastian, who then stabbed Jace. Surprised and hurt by the heavenly fire that leaked out of the wound, Sebastian and his army fled the battle.

Brother Zachariah attempted to heal Jace but was engulfed in flames. Clary marked Jace with an Agony healing rune powerful enough to heal him.

Sebastian soon kidnapped the Downworld representatives, along with Jocelyn, and held them hostage, demanding the Clave hand over Jace and Clary for their return.

While waiting for the Clave's decision, Emma told Jace and the others that Sebastian and his army had hinted at staying in another dimension called Edom when they had attacked her Institute.

After Alec did some research, Jace, Clary, Simon, Alec, and Isabelle escaped to rescue them by going through faerie tunnels to get there.

Once in the other dimension, Clary was able to use a rune she imagined to transfer the heavenly fire from Jace into Heosphoros.

He and Clary came up with a plan that they kept from the others which worked out well and allowed Clary to get close enough to stab Sebastian with it, killing him and his army along with him.

To get home they had to make a deal with Magnus's father, the Prince of Hell Asmodeus. This resulted in a sacrifice from Simon, giving up his immortality and being a vampire along with his memories of the Shadow World and the others, including Clary.

Clary and Izzy were visibly upset for a long time after, and though Jace tried not to show it, he also greatly missed Simon. At Jocelyn and Luke's wedding in May , Simon appeared during the reception, having been able to retrieve some of his memories from Magnus.

Later that year, Jace was invited to the Shadowhunter Academy , where they had sent Simon in hopes of helping him regain all his memories through Ascension , to teach a lesson as a guest tutor.

There, he confessed to Simon he had been doing research into his family history to try to understand what it meant to be a Herondale.

Simon pointed him in the direction of their guest lecturer, Tessa Gray , who turned out to be his ancestor.

They met and conversed about the Herondales and Jace felt better knowing there was someone who shared his blood and understood it all.

She even took him and Clary on a tour of the Herondale manor. Jace has since become more serious about his passion for music.

He'd begun to play more challenging pieces and composing, even collaborating once with fellow musician, Simon, on " Come Back, Meow ", a song dedicated to Chairman Meow.

Around a year later, Maryse stepped down as head of the Institute, and Jace and Clary were voted in by the Conclave as the new heads, making them two of the youngest Shadowhunters to ever hold the position.

In the midst of Isabelle and Simon's engagement party in , Jace proposed to Clary. Her answer was interrupted by Magnus and Robert as the pair were pulled off to the Los Angeles Institute for a mission.

Confused and hurt, Jace allotted her space, though he couldn't help wondering what he had done wrong despite her assurances that it was something wrong with her.

A few weeks later, Jace returned to the L. A Institute with Clary to pass on what was discussed in a recent Council meeting.

While there, Jace met and spoke with Kit Herondale and convinced him to put off running away until he had experienced a Shadowhunter's life.

Following a meeting with the residents of the Institute, Jace and Clary pulled Mark aside to question him about Faerie, and revealed that they were being sent on a mission there to investigate an unknown weapon left by Sebastian.

While in the Seelie Court they learned the weapon was Sebastian's son—he had fathered a child with the Seelie Queen —whom the Unseelie King had kidnapped and placed a number of spells upon.

The King planned to place more that would allow Ash Morgenstern to spread a Blight that rendered seraphic magic— runes , Seraph blades , Witchlights , etc.

Before they could get close to him, Clary and Jace were captured by the Riders of Mannan and imprisoned in the Unseelie Tower.

Soon Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn joined them in the cells, and upon the arrival of Cristina Rosales and Adaon , they were able to escape.

They ventured up to the throne room in order to save Mark and Kieran who had also been captured. A fight soon broke out and Jace and Clary were able to return to the mortal world with Cristina and the Eternidad.

Julian and Emma arrived back at the LA Institute only moments after the rest had but it was clear they had gone somewhere else as they were in bad shape.

Jace and Clary decided to stay around the Institute to help out. When they came to, they shared the story of Thule and all they had learned there, including how to treat the blight and cure the warlocks.

They immediately made plans for Jace and Clary to go and retrieve some water from Lake Lyn to cure Magnus. However, by morning, they had received a letter from the Cohort that stalled their departure: Jace and Clary were pronounced dead and the Shadowhunters were officially at war with the fey.

Other arrangements were made to retrieve and distribute the water and the inhabitants of the LA Institute began making plans for what to do next.

Julian ended up calling a war council which initially angered Jace as he had specifically told Julian it was a bad idea, but Jace came around.

At the meeting, Jace and Clary revealed themselves to be alive which sent a shock wave through the room. That evening, he and Clary camped out with the rest of their friends in Brocelind Forest , in preparation for the upcoming parley.

As Julian's plan played out, Jace and Clary remained at camp as bait. Members of the Cohort lead by Manuel Villalobos attacked the camp in an attempt to murder them before it could be revealed that Horace Dearborn had lied about their deaths.

However they had planned for this and those there were tied up and march to the Imperishable Fields as proof. They tried to convince Horace to end the farce and go back to Alicante to face the Council but he refused and a battle ensued.

Jace fought alongside his parabatai and friends but opted to try knocking people out with the flat of his blade or having Clary use runes rather than killing them.

When Julian and Emma rose up as giants , Jace tried to stand in their way and stop them, but they merely flicked him away.

After a few iratzes , Jace planned to go after them again, this time with a weapon but was stopped by the Blackthorn family approaching and talking them down; which he and his friends soon joined them in doing so.

A few days after the battle, they attended the Council meeting for the Cohort's sentencing and to elect a new Consul. When the floor was opened up to nominations, Jace immediately jumped up to put Alec forward.

As Alec was announced as the winner of the election, Jace threw himself at Alec with joy. Though that quickly faded upon the Cohort's display.

Via the threat of suicide, they demanded all those who did not support them leave Idris and be in exile. Jace followed Alec in his decision to leave.

In the weeks following their exile, Jace and Clary became part of and hosted a crisis team in New York — which was working on rebuilding, figuring out who had stayed in Alicante and who hadn't, planning the elections that needed to be held, etc.

During this time, with their engagement in question now that Clary had explained why she initially said no, Jace began to make plans to re-propose to her and decided to do so after Magnus and Alec's wedding.

Some time after he had stopped, Clary Portaled them to the greenhouse at the NY Institute where she had set up a picnic for them beforehand.

There she gave him a blade with herons etched across it and on the back the words "Will you marry me" in Latin.

Jace was surprised but then pulled out a pair of rings and proposed to her as well. This time, Clary said yes. Overcome with happiness, the pair began discussing their future and Jace announced that he would like to have a big family with kids.

Jace had always been independent and somehow self-possessed, having been taught not to betray himself to emotions as a child. Jace has a sharp, defensive wit, an acidic temperament which was later only tamed by Clary, and a very sarcastic attitude when he chooses in order to hide his insecurities.

Giving the impression of holding most people in disdain, Jace is seen as extremely arrogant, self-centered, and overconfident, believing himself to be "the best Shadowhunter to ever live" and above others.

True enough, Jace is superior in battle, something Jace has been training for since he was young and had grown to love over the years.

He even exhibits sadistic tendencies, which he got on account of being raised by Valentine. Despite this, Jace, in fact, has a strong moral core.

He is dutiful and just, willing to make the right decisions, and sacrifices if it comes down to it. Though he can be, at times, vindictive, he is cruel only to protect those he loves.

His conceited exterior hides a profound inner hatred which intensifies after he mistakenly believed he was demonic, blaming the demon blood for his conflicting thoughts and his, then presumed, incestuous feelings towards Clary.

Even after this was disproved and contradicted by the fact that he actually is part angel, even more so than regular people of his kind, Jace continued to carry the weight of the lies he had lived for so long.

An example of this is Jace's love for the man who raised him and whom he believed to be his father, Valentine; despite the abuse and the deceit, Valentine was at times kind and affectionate towards him, and Jace found himself missing his father figure.

Like Valentine and the Lightwoods , Jace also shared the snobbish attitude toward mundanes and Downworlders, though he lacked their extremist tendencies.

Beneath Jace's flippant exterior lies a soul in constant torment, filled with a deep-seated rage that he keeps in check most of the time and channels into fighting and slaying demons and also, sometimes, his sarcastic and nasty remarks.

Jace relaxes and calms his nerves by getting into fights, with Clary even noting that fighting to Jace is "what sex is to normal people.

Aware of his own beauty, Jace was also once quite chivalrous, and quite flirty, towards women before he met Clary. His charisma, good looks, and charm have made him quite the ladies' man.

However, taught that "to love is to destroy, and to be loved is to be destroyed.
