Langella explains that if she or her husband consents to open the dome and push the button, someone, somewhere in the world will die — someone whom they don't know.

But he cannot push the button himself, it has to be them, and if they inform the police or anyone else, the deal is off. He politely explains that Cameron and her husband, played by James Marsden, now have 24 hours to think it over.

Oh lordy, what on earth are they going to do? Who is this person? A madman? A government agent? Marsden and Diaz do have financial worries, though, and the man's money is real enough.

What harm could it do to humour this wacko and take his cash? This crazy box with the red button couldn't really kill someone But what sort of weird Mephistophelean bargain would they be making?

This film, directed by Richard Kelly, is based on the short story Button, Button by the science-fiction writer Richard Matheson author of I Am Legend ; it later became a Twilight Zone television episode.

The original story, a little like WW Jacobs's supernatural tale The Monkey's Paw, resolves its intriguing premise with elegant swiftness.

Director Richard Kelly wrote a script based on the short story "Button, Button" by author Richard Matheson , which had previously been turned into a Twilight Zone episode of the same name.

Kelly described his intent for the film, "My hope is to make a film that is incredibly suspenseful and broadly commercial, while still retaining my artistic sensibility.

Filming also took place in Richmond, Virginia, including overhead shots of the city, including 95 South passing the train station.

Many background extras were reused in different scenes, and people with period-correct 60s and 70s cars were encouraged to participate.

Arlington Steward's car, in particular, is a Buick Electra , although characters in the movie refer to it as Lincoln Town Car an entirely different car model, which was not yet in production at the time the movie is set.

Actor Frank Langella was cast in October , and production began on the film the following month. The film was first released in Australia on October 29, While it was originally scheduled to be released in the U.

The film received mixed reviews from film critics. The site's consensus is that "Imaginative but often preposterous, The Box features some thrills but largely feels too piecemeal.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times , gave the film three out of four stars, and wrote: "This movie kept me involved and intrigued, and for that I'm grateful.

Keith Uhlich of Time Out New York named The Box the ninth-best film of , calling it "a defiantly personal project that solidifies writer-director Richard Kelly's talent, even as it surely pushes him further toward the filmmaking fringe.

A man gets a chance to meet up with his dream girl from high school, even though his date with her back then was a complete disaster.

A former record executive hires a hitman to kill his family in an attempt to gain his son's inheritance from a medical malpractice suit.

An abused child is offered escape by some mysterious strangers who may or may not know where missing children genuinely disappear to.

Norma and Arthur Lewis, a suburban couple with a young child, receive a simple wooden box as a gift, which bears fatal and irrevocable consequences.

However, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world, someone they don't know.

With just 24 hours to have the box in their possession, Norma and Arthur find themselves in the cross-hairs of a startling moral dilemma and must face the true nature of their humanity.

Written by Warner Bros. The Box begins with a fine premise. Would you accept one million dollars if it meant that someone - a person you don't know - will have to die?

Of course the question begs the fact that people we don't know are always dying; millions every day. So, in fact, the question should be, One more person than would otherwise.

Anyway I'm willing to go along with the premise. And, in fact there is an ending to the movie that - to me, at least - resonates with the premise.

Which is to say, a clever ending. But the film, like most films, is mostly middle. Or in this case 'muddle'.

Because here in the middle all sorts of stuff happens that a make no sense and b appear to belong to another film but c are supposedly important.

There's astronaut stuff, lightning stuff, library stuff, zombie-like stuff, foot stuff, wedding reception stuff, and - get this - wedding rehearsal stuff.

Also, there's Cameron Diaz. Whom I like. Or liked in Something About Mary. And other 'lighter' roles.

But here, in this life-and-death of a movie she seems miscast. Unlike Frank Langella who is perfectly cast. I'm going to end with this.

I saw the film last night. It was the one and only time I ever saw it. I'm open to the possibility that to be appreciated it needs more than one viewing.

The original story, a little like WW Jacobs's supernatural tale The Monkey's Paw, resolves its intriguing premise with elegant swiftness.

But this film just goes interminably on and on, like some pop video to a prog rock track from hell, padding things out to feature length with all sorts of incredible gibberish and extraneous nonsense about the Mars landing and government conspiracies.

Marsden enters it, and this block of water winds up hovering over his sleeping wife in bed. Marsden is discharged from it with an almighty deluge, gallons of water sploshing unglamorously everywhere, soaking the fixtures and fittings.

Not so much Kubrick's , more It's a Knockout. After making his tremendous debut with Donnie Darko in , Kelly was launched on a career trajectory which is rapidly losing height.

I have seen movies without a proper third act, heaven knows, and movies with no second act — but this is a movie without a first act.

All it has is that one opening idea, an intriguing premise with nothing to follow. But I wonder, in any case, if any filmic comparisons offer the real key to this bizarre movie's existence.

A sinister man? A box? Which may grant large sums of money? And the man is in league with an unseen power?

Surely the film has been inspired by the chilling Noel Edmonds himself, whose career has achieved a kind of Satanic resurrection as the host of Deal Or No Deal — that twinkly bearded enigma, who refers to the studio audience as "pilgrims" and is such a huge fan of self-realisation books which encourage you to get rich simply by asking fate for what you want.

Perhaps Langella himself can now be got up in that goatee and jumper, assume the suzerainty of Crinkly Bottom, summon up the dark presence of Mr Blobby, and impersonate the great magus himself in his denunciations of political correctness and elf'n'safety.

Now that would be disturbing. They open the box to discover it is 'just a bunch of wood', and Arthur chastises Norma for her fear, but no decision is made before they go to sleep.

They discuss the matter further in the morning, and after work, Arthur reveals that the hundred dollar bill is real. After further discussion, Norma impulsively pushes the button, whispering 'It's just a box'.

It is revealed that someone is shot, and the gunman ran from the scene with a briefcase. Arthur attempts to return the money, but Steward declines, stating that he can do nothing because "the button has been pressed".

The police treat the murder as a domestic homicide, and it is discovered that the husband of the woman who was shot is a colleague of Arthur's.

The chief tells Cahill that Steward became "something else" after being killed by lightning, shortly after NASA received the first photograph transmitted by the Viking 1 Mars lander in July Arthur and Norma become plagued by seemingly supernatural happenings, and are visited by others who fell victim to the box, pressing the button and suffering the same fate as the Lewis family.

It is revealed that Arlington has been collaborating with a group of benefactors, using the box to decide whether the human race is worth preserving.

After several paranormal incursions, Arlington returns to the Lewis home and informs them that Walter, earlier kidnapped by unknown assailants, is locked in the family's bathroom upstairs and has been stricken blind and deaf.

Arlington laments that he had hoped the family would not succumb to the temptation of the money, and delivers a final ultimatum: They may keep the money and live out their lives with their disabled son, or Arthur can kill Norma, thereby restoring Walter's sight and hearing, with the million dollars placed in a high-interest account available to him when he turns Arthur contemplates killing Arlington, who warns him he will be charged with the murder, his son's condition will remain, and the family will be left with nothing.

Arlington departs, and Arthur realizes the choice to push the button has placed the family in purgatory. Norma, wanting her son to live his life without disability, asks Arthur to kill her, and after a long goodbye, he complies.

The scene cuts between Arthur and Norma and another couple offered the same box. They also decide to press the button, resulting in Norma's death.

It is implied that this mysterious offer will continue among other couples in the future. Director Richard Kelly wrote a script based on the short story "Button, Button" by author Richard Matheson , which had previously been turned into a Twilight Zone episode of the same name.
